Only days ago, I celebrated my one year anniversary as a licensed massage therapist. I canʼt believe a year passed so quickly! This mile-marker celebration causes me to look back at my days at the New Mexico School of Natural Therapeutics (NMSNT), where I underwent my natural therapeutics and massage therapy training. And I look back upon that time with great fondness.
Over the course of my lifetime, Iʼve endured much regimented schooling, having completed 22 years of continuous academic vigor with the end-product of an advanced scientific degree. Yet within those years of structured and rigorous curricula, with fine teachers and vast well-springs of information, Iʼve never had an education experience like my time at NMSNT.
On the first of day of class at NMSNT, all of the new students gathered with the teachers and administrators and shared in an activity called “Opening Circle.” General introductions and info about the program were shared, and the instructors informed (warned us, really) that the journey on which we were embarking, in order to one day accompany others in their healing, would demand that we ourselves be healed. They shared with us the notion that this education is like no other education (and they meant it!) in that it demands and calls forth out of us, our own transformation. It is an inner odyssey that guides us nearer and nearer to the fulfillment of who we truly are.
And thus began our journey…
The school year was filled with learning of diverse perspectives on health and healing. We became well- versed in physiology and anatomy, in head-knowledge and analytical deduction of physical symptoms and misalignments. We became experts in countless modalities, ranging from Swedish Massage, Sports Massage, Polarity Therapy, Flower Essences, Shiatsu, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Core Therapy, and so much more. And ultimately, we were taught to call up and trust our own inner guides and intuition. And it is from this place of intuition that we became servants of sacred touch. We learned that the abundance of sensory receptors in our fingertips were just as reliable (and sometimes more so) than our other senses. We learned that it is through these fingers (and hands and hearts), energized with loving intention and attention, that the healing powers of the Great Healer work through us.
It was quite the education, indeed.
And at the end of the year, as we gathered in “Closing Circle” to wind down and reflect on our shared journey, we knew that though we learned so much, it was really only the beginning. We knew that, armed with the knowledge and skill and resources we obtained at the New Mexico School of Natural Therapeutics, we would each continue on our own paths of healing, and that we would have the joy and privilege to walk with and accompany our clients as they too strove toward health and wholeness.
